NRC/WTFDA Convention: Rochester 2010

Postby Paul Swearingen » Tue 7 Apr 2009 12:44

The National Radio Club and the Worldwide TV/FM DX Association are coming to Rochester, New York
for their joint 2010 convention!

The convention takes place Friday, August 27-Sunday, August 29 at the Brookwood Inn in Bushnell’s Basin, a quaint village along the Erie Canal just east of Rochester.

For early arrivals Thursday night, we’ll have an informal dinner and perhaps a Rochester Red Wings baseball game.

On Friday, it’s a day full of station tours around Rochester, followed by a cookout at the home of club member Jim Renfrew - and a chance to play with his elaborate DX setup!

On Saturday, we’ll have more station tours, followed by dinner, a speaker and the world-famous club auction. (Note: please – no children during the business meeting or speaker’s presentation; hold all questions until after the speaker has finished.)

And on Sunday, it’s the Quiz before we all go our separate ways.

If you’re thinking of a family vacation this summer, Lisa Fybush is organizing family activities for non-radio-geek spouses and children.

Please e-mail scott@fybush.com if you want more details.

--LODGING – Our host hotel is the Brookwood Inn, conveniently located just off I-490 and adjacent to the historic Erie Canal. Rooms are just $65/night for up to four people, and breakfast is included.

To make your reservation, please call (585) 249-6000 and mention you’re with the National Radio Club.

--REGISTRATION – Convention registration information will be announced in May … for now, save the date, and please let your convention hosts know if you’re thinking of attending so we can start to get a head count. Drop Scott a line at scott@fybush.com or 92 Bonnie Brae Ave, Rochester NY 14618. We’ll have much more information as the convention gets closer...stay tuned!

From the July 19 DXN: NRC/WTFDA Convention: Rochester 2010

Postby Paul Swearingen » Sat 10 Jul 2010 22:15

It’s a weekend full of radio fun in upstate New York, Friday, Aug. 27 – Sunday Aug. 29!

WHERE?

Rochester, New York, within a day’s drive of almost anywhere in the northeast or midwest. Our host hotel, the Brookwood Inn, sits along the historic Erie Canal in the quaint village of Bushnell’s Basin, just east of Rochester and a few freeway exits off the New York State Thruway (I-90).

WHAT’S GOING ON?

If you’re in town on Thursday night (Aug. 26), we’ll have an informal welcome dinner and a Rochester Red Wings baseball game if there’s interest. (Please contact Scott Fybush, scott@fybush.com, to sign up for Thursday events!)

On Friday, we’ll get started in the morning with a full roster of Rochester station tours – plus a live broadcast of Bob Smith’s 1370 Connection talk show at WXXI, Rochester’s public radio/TV station, where DX and radio will be the topic of the day and some NRC/DXAS members will be guests. (Everyone else gets to watch from the next studio!)

After the tours, we’ll head out to the home of NRC’s Jim Renfrew for an informal BBQ dinner and DX session.

Saturday morning starts with DX seminars featuring some of the top names in the hobby. After lunch, it’s a tour of the fantastic Antique Wireless Association Museum in nearby Bloomfield. (The meeting room will be open all weekend for those not going on the tours!)

Saturday night is banquet time. We’ve got a great buffet lined up at nearby Mario’s Italian Restaurant, where our speaker will be WXXI radio’s Bob Smith, who’ll talk about his long career in both commercial and public radio at stations such as WHEN, WBEN and WKBW. Then it’s back to the Brookwood for the business meeting and the annual auction.

On Sunday, we’ve got the famous DX Quiz in the morning before we all go our separate ways.

FUN FOR THE FAMILY!

There’s plenty to do in greater Rochester for spouses and kids, too. Lisa Fybush is coordinating family activities Friday and Saturday; contact her at lisa@fybush.com for details.

MAKE YOUR RESERVATION NOW!

Rooms at the Brookwood Inn are available at a special NRC rate of just $65/night (plus tax) for up to four people in a room – but you have to register by July 26. Room availability is limited, especially for Thursday night arrivals, so don’t wait until the last minute to make your reservations.

Breakfast is included in the $65 rate, and there’s free parking and a free shuttle to the Rochester airport and the train and bus stations available. (Advance notice is required for pickup!)

To make your reservation, call the Brookwood Inn at 800-396-1194 or 585-248-9000 and be sure to say you are part of the National Radio Club group.

REGISTER NOW, TOO!

Registration for the weekend is just $55. That includes two meals - both Friday and Saturday night dinner - plus snacks in the convention room and your convention program. Send your check (payable to National Radio Club) to Greg Coniglio, 11825 Genesee Street, Alden NY 14004 – or go online at nrcdxas.org and use PayPal. Registrations are due by August 1.

BRING US YOUR AUCTION ITEMS!

The Saturday night auction is always a highlight of the NRC Convention, and this year’s will be no different. But we need your help to make it a good one. Got an old radio you’re not using? A stack of vintage NRC Logs or DXN issues? Send them along to Greg Coniglio, 11825 Genesee Street, Alden NY 14004 – or just bring them to the convention in August!

SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE!

Do you have a DX specialty? Maybe you’ve become an expert on ultra-light radios, or longwire antennas, or perhaps you’ve got a story to share about a DXpedition you’ve been on. Share your expertise at our Saturday morning seminars! Contact Jim Renfrew at jrenfrew@rochester.rr.com to sign up for a slot on the schedule.
